Thursday, November 25 at 18.30 third meeting of Geology by dr. Delio Mica who will talk about "VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES"
Two effects of the movements of the earth's crust are the volcanoes and earthquakes. Both are produced by the intense and sometimes deep fractures that occur when interacting lithospheric plates colliding or moving away. It is therefore normal natural phenomena occurring around the globe in both the continental and oceanic.
When these phenomena affect human populations, if not properly assessed, can be a risk that could be controlled by the light of modern knowledge which have now fully explained the origins and effects often destructive.
The Italian peninsula and Sicily are in a unique situation given by the collision, has already happened, the African plate with Europe that caused the closure of an ocean, the Tethys, which lies between the two continents, giving rise to the Alpine-Himalayan orogeny. Even today, such movements act of compression fractures in the Mediterranean region, producing intense crustal earthquakes that cause periodic phenomena also very intense and both fossil and active volcanism is present mainly in south-central Mediterranean
